Famed expo draws art collectors and dealers to the capital

As China’s art market continues to flourish, the gallery industry has also developed rapidly, particularly in Beijing, where galleries of many different sizes are popping up all over the place.

According to China Culture Daily, there were 1,512 galleries in major Chinese cities at the end of last year, of which Beijing accounted for 40 percent.

I remember a Financial Times’ reporter once described sleepy and far-off Hengqin as “known for one thing, and one thing only: oysters”. He was perfectly right, but no longer today. Hengqin’s former barren and dumping field-like environs have changed dramatically. Its many oyster shacks and fish ponds are being demolished to make room for a central business district and seaside resorts.
